The BREATHE Project Announces Release of Debut Song & Video ‘Breathe’ on August 22

August 07
07:28 2020

Welcome to the historically significant month of August, and the BREATHE PROJECT. On August 22, 2020, at 8:46pm, the BREATHE project will make its grand debut in the form of its first song and video release, appropriately titled “BREATHE.” Fifty African American males (AAMs) from Wichita, Kansas will proudly proclaim to their city and to the world: “All Men are Free to Breathe”.

The BREATHE project aims to take control of mainstream narratives that have been distorted, deficit-informed, and blatantly irresponsible in depicting Black male culture as one of inferiority, minimal academic capacity, and savagery. On August 22, 2020, 50 black men, ranging from age 10 to 75, will collectively denounce these stereotypes and demand control of creating our own imagery and telling our own stories going forward.

The project will promote and encourage the use of our voices, our songs, our creative gifts, and our positive energy to spark dialogue that acknowledges our contributions to society. It will hopefully inspire other Black men to pursue similar movements throughout the country and even the world. It will tell the world that we are not criminals, rapists, or detriments to society – we are doctors, engineers, pastors, educators, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, husbands, sons, fathers, friends, and more.

“Everything from the Blues to various advanced medical procedures figuratively and literally depict a population that has given the nation its soul and its heartbeat. It is time to destroy narratives and depictions that suggest otherwise,” said Kevin Sylvester Harrison of the BREATHE project.

The month of August carries great significance when considering historical events that have impacted Black men in America.  From the bitter reality of African slaves arriving in Jamestown in August 1619 and the senseless murder of Emmitt Till in August 1955; to the sweet resolve of the historic “I Have a Dream” speech in August 1963, and President Obama accepting the Democratic nomination for the presidency in August 2008, August has been a month that consistently reflects the bitter sweet existence of rising above oppression through excellence and elegance and making something from nothing. A test of courage and strength that is synonymous with the Black male experience.

Let’s make August 2020 historic as well by celebrating a movement that is necessary for a nation in dire need of racial healing.  Join us on August 22, 2020 as we celebrate “BREATHE” – available on all streaming platforms (iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, etc), as well as on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

For the debut song, lyrics and vocal arrangement are by Dr. Kevin Harrison; musical arrangement and direction by Samuel Hines; vocal direction Kevin Harrison and Khoris Antone; recording and engineering by Corey and Natalie Rolfe at Mixdown Studios; and visuals by Devon Bray and Bray Films.
