After 15 years in the waste industry Managing Director Ross Martin decided it was time for a new challenge which resulted in him selling his existing junk removal business and setting up Jettison Ltd focussing solely on industrial and commercial waste clearance.

When Ross started his previous business back in 2006, there was nothing quite like it in the UK. Eventually, the brand became well known and very successful but over recent years the marketplace had become flooded with copycat companies picking very similar names and branding which not only muddied the waters from a customer point of view but only drove down prices as everyone competed for the same business, of which a large portion was domestic clearances. The model still worked but it no longer worked for a Director with ambition and vision of a better work-life balance for him and his staff.

Ross had a clear idea of what Jettison & its company values should be. He wanted to re-brand, refocus and work on the much bigger and more complex business-to-business type work as well as giving his staff a quality working environment and a happy work/life balance. However, only 6 months after getting the business up and running, a global pandemic came along which could have proved catastrophic to any new company. Thankfully, being new enabled the business to quickly adapt to the most challenging circumstances, plus Ross also had the benefit of his previous 15 years of experience, knowing exactly which pitfalls to avoid. All of which has resulted in Jettison going from strength to strength over the past 18 months.

‘There were moments during the pandemic where it was tempting to slip back into the old tried and tested business model and take any work that came Jettison’s way’ says Ross but it didn’t sit well with him to fall back into old habits as he maintains not all business is good business. Holding his nerve & knowing his market certainly paid off.

Based in Glasgow and with a core team of only 5, Jettison has become waste contractors for several well-known household brands and takes on clearance projects across the UK – including most recently the strip out for a chain of high street stores between Inverness and Barrow in Furness. They carry out clearance work for Universities, Government bodies, Facilities Management companies, and Commercial Landlords and feel optimistic about what the rubbish the next 18 months will bring.
