Secret Smile offers a convenient alternative to braces

Straight and beautiful teeth give everyone an extra reason to smile. Unfortunately, not everyone likes the idea or the look of braces. Large brackets glued to the teeth can be considered unsightly and they can even be uncomfortable. Those who have worn braces know just how they can irritate the interior of the mouth and cause difficulty while eating. The good news is that Secret Smile has an easy and just about invisible solution with clear teeth aligners.

What are clear aligners?

They are also known as invisible aligners and are designed to correct crooked teeth. Since they are made from transparent materials, they are virtually unnoticeable and, unlike braces, they can be removed when eating as well as when brushing and flossing. Each aligner is custom-made to ensure best results. Clear teeth aligners are also a good invisalign alternative.

What can they treat?

These aligners are used to treat a number of dental issues including crowded teeth (overlapping), overbites, underbites, diastema (gaps between teeth) and open bites (upper and lower front teeth slant outwards and don’t touch when the mouth is closed). They can also be used during the first phase of orthodontic treatment when children have a combination of baby and permanent teeth. This is ideal for children between the ages of 6 and 10.

How they work

Taking a scan:

Like braces, there is a multi-step approach when it comes to clear teeth aligners. The first of which is a consultation with an orthodontist. The teeth are examined before a 3D scan of the mouth is taken. This scan allows the orthodontist to begin a custom treatment plan with the patient.

Preparing the aligner:

Once the teeth impressions are complete, the models for the digital models of the aligners are sent to a facility for production. Once ready, the aligners are sent to the orthodontist who will deliver them to the patient. It is best to have an orthodontist fit them for the first time in order to ensure that they fit properly.

Daily routine:

While braces remain in place on the patient’s teeth, aligners can be removed when eating or when brushing. Apart from this, they should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours each day in order to prove effective. Failing to wear them for several hours can cause a regression in treatment. Usually, these aligners need to be replaced every couple of weeks, depending on the treatment plan. This plan can change over time depending on the patient and their needs. New aligners are made to further the progress. Depending on the severity of each case, aligners might need to be worn for 10 to 24 months. In some cases, longer.

After treatment:

Once the treatment is complete, a clear retainer should be worn every night in order to prevent the teeth from moving back into their misaligned positions.

It should go without saying that dirt and food particles can build up in these clear teeth aligners and, just like regular brushing, they need to be cleaned too. Not only will the orthodontist discuss the personalized treatment plan with the patient, but also care and cleaning advice to ensure proper oral hygiene.
