The Florida Legislature approved Chase Roofing, LLC as a contractor for the My Safe Florida Home program in Weston, FL, on January 13th, 2023. The program offers single-family homeowners a free Wind Mitigation Home Inspection to pinpoint weaknesses in their homes and a Wind Mitigation Grant to address any issues identified in the inspection. With this program, Weston homeowners can work with approved contractors like Chase Roofing to strengthen their homes to resist hurricanes and other high-wind events through construction methods, designs, or materials. By participating in the program, homeowners could also lower their insurance premiums.

The Florida Legislature re-enacted the My Safe Florida Home program in 2022, which the State funds by administering free home inspections and providing grants. The Legislature has also granted tax exemptions for home-hardening initiatives. Until June 30, 2024, purchases of impact-resistant doors, impact-resistant windows, and impact-resistant garage doors will be exempt from sales tax (6%).

All owners of site-built, single-family, residential homes are eligible to apply for a wind mitigation home inspection without being obligated to apply for the grant. Applications for the program will be examined and approved in the order they are received until current funding is depleted.

To qualify for the My Safe Florida Home program, applicants must provide proof of their homestead exemption and documentation that their home is insured for less than $500,000. They must also be located in a region vulnerable to wind-borne debris and have had their initial building construction permit issued before January 1, 2008. 

The DFS (Florida Department of Financial Services) anticipates completing between 140,000 and 145,000 initial Wind Mitigation Inspections for eligible homeowners. The inspections will identify elements in a home’s construction that could be improved to prevent future wind damage.

Homeowners who receive free inspections will be eligible to apply for wind mitigation grants to improve their roofs, windows, and other parts of their homes. 

The DFS expects to award between 11,000 and 12,000 Wind Mitigation Grants that will cover the following initiatives.

• Upgrade Roof Coverings

• Improve the Strength of Roof Deck Attachments

• Reinforce Roof-to-Wall Connections

• Install a Secondary Water Barrier for the Roof

• Exterior Door Upgrades

• Garage Door Upgrades

• Window Upgrades

For every $1 that approved homeowners spend on repairs or mitigation projects, they will receive $2 in grant funds, up to a maximum of $10,000, as long as an approved contractor does the repairs. To receive the full grant, homeowners must spend $5,000 on hurricane mitigation initiatives.
