Duane Arthur Ose’s Alaskan Wilderness Adventure: Book 1 is a unique journey told through the eyes of a man who never accepted the limitations of modern living.

After extensively researching the Federal Homestead Act of 1862, Duane staked a claim in the Alaskan wilderness in 1985 and filed it in October 1986 making him the last homesteader in America. Duane grew up on a farm in Yellow Medicine County and served in a demilitarized zone in Korea during 1964-1965. Also, he served in the Nike Missile Site C-47 near Wheeler, Indiana, and was honorably discharged on 1967. He then, returned home to operate his own cement business.

Now, though, the ageing Oses are seeking a couple to take over their wilderness experiment. Instead of calling in the estate agents, they participated in the most curious reality TV show I have ever watched.  The Netflix Original ‘Win the Wilderness’ is an astonishing series that follows 6 British couples as they compete to lay claim on a property in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.We spoke to the man behind the book to learn more about what inspired him.

“I have always wanted to put my story down on paper, so one day I just decided to go for it and make a start. It didn’t come easy at first, but once I saw the scenes of my life come back to life before my very eyes, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to stop until I got my story out there. My goal has been to show people the excitement and adventure that comes from breaking the mold and waving goodbye to the status quo so that you can live life on your own terms. I set out to stake a claim to land, build a home and settle somewhere that was everything I always it to be. I hope that this sense of adventure and excitement an spur on others to follow their dreams in life and never hold back, no matter what it is they’re searching for.”

It’s certainly inspiring to hear from the man himself, but does he envisage the book reaching past the niche audience we initially thought it was written for?

“I absolutely think that this book can reach out to a wider audience – it’s about following your dreams and coming to terms with what you can achieve when you break free from normal living. I want every page to inspire people to do more than they ever thought possible so that they can live the lives they deserve. I know that I’ve been fortunate to live the life I have, so I feel that now is the time to share the lessons I’ve learned along the way so that others have the chance to do the same.”

It’s a unique approach that he brings to storytelling, and one that we’re excited to see a growing audience connect with. With that said, are there any final words to share with prospective readers?

“I just hope that whoever picks up this book spends the time to sit and reflect on what they want from life. When I was serving it gave me hours and hours of time for reflection, and I used that time to focus on what I really wanted out of life. The result was the life you will read about in my new book, but I don’t want that to be the only result. Really what I want is for the way I live to inspire others to do the same and set themselves and the people they love free.”
